HIGH INTEGRATION ACTUATOR (HIA)

High Integration is a design approach whereby all major components are integrated into a single sealed module. 

There are two types of HIAs: non-backdrivable with integral brake (left) and backdrivable (below). A non-backdrivable HIA holds its position when power is removed. 

Non-backdrivable HIAs are useful when a controlled device must remain in its current position when power is removed.

Major HIA components consist of:

• A linear actuator
• An electric motor
• A feedback potentiometer
• An optical encoder
• Temperature sensors
• A servo power amplifier (Controller Area Network [CAN] amplifier)
• A digital servo control processor, and
• A microcontroller with CAN bus interface
