MEERKAT INTERIM
VEHICLE-MOUNTED MINE DETECTOR (IVMMD)
Meerkat
IVMMD is a vehicle-mounted mine detector Non-Developmental Item produced
by the Rolling Stock Division in South Africa. It is capable of providing
forward and rear area security by detecting high-metallic antitank mines
on roads. Meerkat's primary mission includes minefield detection for reconnaissance
forces, preceding convoys (both on road and limited cross-country) to
protect following vehicles. It also detects minefield leading edges for
breaching teams.
When
installed on a Meerkat, the Standardized Robotic System
enables the Meerkat to be teleoperated or remotely-controlled while performing
mine detection and marking operations. As the Meerkat drives on roads
or cross-country, data is accumulated, processed, and displayed to the
crew in the Command Vehicle (CV). The Meerkat has a mine marking system
to permit follow-on forces to locate, avoid, and neutralize the detected
mines.
A teleoperated Meerkat
can perform nearly any mission that a manually-operated Meerkat can perform,
but it does so with the operator situated in the safety of a protected
CV.
